UK defence ministry offers contracts up to £100 million to newcomer tech firms

Britain's Ministry of Defence says it is offering bigger, faster contracts to tech firms it has barely worked with. No company has been named yet.

£100Mmaximum value of accelerated contracts over four years, per the MoD

Britain's Ministry of Defence is offering accelerated contracts worth up to £100 million over four years to British technology firms with little or no previous business with it, according to the UK Defence Journal. Defence minister Luke Pollard confirmed this in a written answer to Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty, saying the work runs through UK Defence Innovation, which helps find and scale defence and dual-use technologies (tools useful to both the military and civilian life).

The aim is to find the next British defence "unicorn", a start-up valued at over a billion. Please note: the answer named no company and did not say how many contracts have been signed. Pollard also said an online marketplace for testing and evaluation is set to launch by the end of 2026, with a proposed date in November.

Why it matters

It shows the UK trying to open defence spending to smaller, newer firms rather than only the usual big contractors.

What we don't know yet

  • How many of these contracts have been awarded or are planned?
  • Which companies, if any, have received one so far?

Note this down

Watch for the Test and Evaluation Marketplace launch, proposed for November 2026.
